Captains Courageous gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to stretch beyond my comfort zone both personally and professionally.  Several years later, I am still quoting the experience as one that taught me my most valuable lessons in leadership.  Leadership “ah-ha moments” in a classroom are fleeting but leadership lessons sailing in open waters are truly unforgettable.  I look forward to my next adventure!

TEEam.jpgWe entered our learning experience as individuals who work for a boss.  We left as a team – and with a set of skills that allow us to effectively communicate with each other, listen and hear as well as be heard , and work together to accomplish great things.  We continue to expand our use of these skills in our work together.  We also got time on beautiful blue water and to learn to sail.  Not bad for 2 days!

In all my years at this company, I’ve never enrolled in a better team building or leadership course than Captains Courageous. My time with Martha Boston is always a valuable investment. So getting away on a sail boat with her, an able captain and 8 other participants who were motivated to learn and grow made for a powerful week. I learned the importance of working well with a team in close quarters. I saw my own leadership and team working style through the eyes of other sailors and learned to make a few adjustments in my professional life which have brought me and my business higher rewards than before the trip.

CC 05 032.jpgWhat a wonderful way to learn more about getting results. I saw that the group solution was superior to any one person’s solution. I was an “A” student and thought that I usually knew the “best” or “right” way or answer. Through very fun processes on Captains Courageous I experienced repeatedly that my point of view was only one viewing point and that if I would surrender my position and cooperate with another’s, my experience was often more fun and the result was good and workable (often superior to what it would have been had we done it my way).

Things were going pretty well before I went on Captains Courageous.  I was getting by, but I wasn't particularly excited by my work.  The trip was an incredible time in itself - beautiful environment, learning to sail, great food, good company - but the experience of pushing myself outside my comfort zone in a whole new area on the boat had a knock-on effect in my work.  I returned home feeling inspired to take more risks, say yes to more things, and as a result had my most successful year yet.

I learned things about how I interact with a team that I have never learned before in my professional work.  That was challenging to learn, but in the end it will be also the most valuable thing I can correct in my professional relationships.

One of my lessons is to remember that what I fear to take on is simply a mental construct. Also, I reframed how I define myself in a group and am more in touch with that part of me that is safe and peaceful at all times. So, in essence, I am feeling safer about being in the world, reaching out, doing something different.

Captains Courageous offered a unique learning experience, teaching us about self directed work teams, and how to make decisions by consensus.  Learning to sail was a big added bonus, but it also reinforced what they taught.  It takes everyone working towards the same goal to maintain momentum.

beautifull_yacht1.jpgI feel like I’m beginning to add a keel to keep me stable. I’m beginning to see my journaling and personal growth work as a navigation chart to pot my course through life. I’m often imagining using the wind to release the age old insecurities.

Captains Courageous is the ultimate experience of learning, growth and exploration.  I visited a new place, discovered a new hobby, and learned new things about myself … and all of that in an easygoing atmosphere with no pressure or stress.

Captains Courageous was impeccably designed and executed, and was life-changing for me.  It gave me opportunities to really hold in my truth and overcome fears. Truly I left many limited parts of myself in that ocean.  Everyone thrived and healed in the environment and nurturing care you provided – and the strength and expansion you demanded from us.  Thank you for the gift of a new life.
